GNU Wget, The Ultimate Command-Line Download Tool

Have you ever use or heard W-get? If you are not, you missing a great free software. GNU W-get is a software for retrieving files using HTTP, HTTPS and FTP, the most widely-used Internet protocols.

W-get is a non-interactive command line tools without user interface. W-get on the first hand was dedicated as download tool for Unix and Linux platform, because of its popularity, W-get has been ported to many other operating system including Windows and Mac OS.

Some of its main feature is recursive download, conversion links for offline viewing of HTML, proxy support and resume download support. Here is w-get full feature list taken directly from GNU website.

  • Can resume aborted downloads, using REST and RANGE
  • Can use filename wild cards and recursively mirror directories
  • NLS-based message files for many different languages
  • Optionally converts absolute links in downloaded documents to relative, so that downloaded documents may link to each other locally
  • Runs on most UNIX-like operating systems as well as Microsoft Windows
  • Supports HTTP and SOCKS proxies
  • Supports HTTP cookies
  • Supports persistent HTTP connections
  • Unattended / background operation
  • Uses local file timestamps to determine whether documents need to be re-downloaded when mirroring

As for me, my main use is to make local copy of website for offline viewing and recursive download from no index website folder. Check out my example how to use w-get.

PS: If you want to know why I write w-get instead of normal word without the dash, read my next post :D

My Extended Live Archive Broken?

Just some quick update if you have not notice my Extended Life Archive (ELA) now broken. I am still investigating what cause that, I tried multiple method but still cant make it work.

So, for the time being I will revert to old WordPress archive system which is a bit slow and not AJAX powered until I figure out what’s wrong with ELA.

Update: October 01, 2007 2.30am
I can view my ELA using Opera and Internet Explorer 7 but not with Firefox and Maxthon which my main browser. Did you think this is my browser problem? Anyone can confirm this for me? Please post in comment below whether it work for you or not.

Update: October 01, 2007 2.47am
OK, finally I figure it out that my Proxomitron cause that error. I still don’t which filter block my ELA and I also have no idea why the heck it block that archive system. I should only block nasty ads or dangerous JavaScript… Anyway another problem solved in 30 minutes. Good night

BlogRush Widget Slowing Down Page Load?

blogrush_widgetI already got my BlogRush widget set up since the first day its launched but I still have not found any benefit to me. Maybe because I got not so many visitor but hey ! I never know if there anyone got here from other’s BlogRush widget’s link.

What I’m sure is, BlogRush slowing down my page load. I don’t know if this is happened only on me or everyone. I doesn’t matter whether I visit my own blog here or I visit other people’s blog. BlogRush widget is the last one to load or maybe on of the slowest loading ads script. One example page is JohnChow blog, which is full of ads. Sometimes it even cause my browser using 100% CPU.

Back to the topic, how did I know BlogRush widget was the one that slowing down my page load? Well, it is very easy, just look on your status bar if you page seems like loading slower than it should be. Normally, you will get some like Waiting for widget.blogrush… or Loading from widget.blogrush… Oh, and if you didn’t see your status bar, you can always on it from view > status bar most browser will have that setting.

Now tell me your experience with BlogRush, is it bring any good to you? or it just slowing down you like it happened to me ?

Microsoft Windows Silent Update

Microsoft Windows do silent update even when you turn off automatic update is one of the hottest topic discussed over Internet. People keep debating it right for Microsoft to that way?

Recently this windows silent updates also happened to me !!. Actually, I didn’t intend to check whether windows automatic updates running silently on my computer or not, I just do some random process and memory checking of my running process.

Look at my screen shot process named wuauclt.exe and its description - Windows Update Automatic Updates and see also the left dialog box for windows update, it is gray out !!! That’s mean.. I don’t even have automatic updates service turned on. I don’t know how windows get it run with its service disabled. Duhh.. Microsoft ~ are you spying on me ? Please don’t do that, you won’t get anything from me. I am damn poor, I don’t anything worth spying… or you are spying my “cough” box?

Restore Last FireFox Session On Start

I don’t really remember when Firefox have this Restore tabs and windows from previous session feature because last time when I still using Firefox as my main browser this option still not there. That is one of the reason why I switch my main browser to Maxthon.

Lucky for Firefox fan because FF also now have this option but still lack of feature to choose which tab to open or to ignore or even to open in offline mode (Firefox have this option?). Just imagine if you have 30+ tabs and want to open ALL this back on start? Your browser might be freeze but some minutes before to load all those pages.

restore last firefox sesion on startup

By the way, here how to do it.

  • Open Firefox options - Menu bar > Tools > Options
  • Go to Main tab
  • Click on When Firefox starts combo box drop down menu
  • Select Show my windows and tabs from last time
  • Click Ok to accept changes.

It is good to keep in mind how many tabs you have before closing Firefox to prevent problem that I told you above. Happy surfing and font forget to get for stability surfing!

Google’s 9th Birthday Logo

google 9th birthdayHey, check this out. I don’t know if you already notice this new Google logo celebrating their 9th birthday. Nice logo huh?

I still remember past back in 1998 when I first know and using internet Yahoo! is the most popular search engine and website (even now yahoo! is the most visited website), I don’t even know what is Google. Now look what they have become in just few years. Knocking back most of the internet leader.

I wonder what will happen now if Yahoo! buy Google back in 2002 but luckily they got enough vision to turn that offer down.

Long live Google!
