Memory Management: Uninstall unused ActiveX in Internet Explorer 7

Did you know all ActiveX you installed over the internet? Is it really useful or it is just waste of your precious resource. Maybe you didn’t care much about your memory if you have large physical memory 1 Gigabyte, 2 Gigabytes or even more. But, for me I will try to track every single byte my applications use, maybe because I used to have only 512MB memory in the past and I have bad habit of extreme multitasking. It is normal for me to have 50+ apps running at the same time.In my personal point of view which I cant prove technically (or I don’t know to prove it) every single object that you see running on your computer will use some memory/resource. Whether it is something with interface or don’t have interface at all. It is a waste if you have/run them but you don’t really use/need them. Enough talking, now lets see how to uninstall ActiveX use by Internet Explorer or IE based browser.

What I’ll show you is from Ie7 because I don’t have ie6 anymore ;)

  • Fire up IE and open Internet Options. Menu bar -> Tools -> Internet Options.
  • Go to programs tab and click on Manage add-ons. ie7 manage addons
  • Now you will see list of installed add-ons. Click on the show combo box will show you some other display options.
  • Now browse trough the list and see what add-ons you have and which one you really use/need.
  • To remove/remove, click on the add-on name and choose disable or delete button.

ie7 add-ons list

Thats it! Now not only your browser will run faster, you will now save a lot of your resource.

Remark:

  • If you don’t know which one to disable, just leave the one Published by Microsoft and you can experiment with other.
  • Check the file name will give you will give you some sense who is the publisher.
  • If something look suspicious try googling the file name in case someone already detect it as malicious thing.
  • If the add-ons have uninstaller, use it! because this can be consider as force way

Thats all, good luck ;)
